How can Azure Service Bus sessions be used when an application must preserve message ordering?

Question

Distributed applications often process messages concurrently, but some business processes require related messages to be handled in a specific order. This discussion explores how Azure Service Bus sessions can group related messages using a session identifier and provide ordered processing within that session. It also examines session-aware consumers, concurrency, session state, retries and failure scenarios. A valuable topic for .NET developers and Azure architects building reliable order-processing, workflow, financial or transaction-oriented messaging solutions.

When messages represent a sequence of related business operations, processing them in the wrong order can produce incorrect application state. Azure Service Bus sessions provide ordered processing for related messages by assigning the same Session ID to messages that belong to the same logical sequence.

For example, an order-processing system might generate messages such as OrderCreated, PaymentConfirmed, and OrderShipped. If these messages belong to the same order, they can use the order identifier as the Session ID. A session-aware consumer can then process that sequence in order.

An important distinction is that message sequence numbers alone do not guarantee processing order when multiple consumers are working concurrently. Sessions provide the mechanism for ordered processing.

Developers should also consider session locking, retries, abandoned messages, dead-letter handling, consumer concurrency, and session distribution. The design should ensure that the session identifier represents the business entity for which ordering actually matters.
