Power Apps provides both Canvas Apps and Model-Driven Apps, but they are designed for different application scenarios. Canvas Apps provide greater control over the user interface and are useful when organizations need highly customized experiences. Model-Driven Apps are centered around Dataverse and are well suited for structured, data-driven business applications.

Choosing between them depends on factors such as data model, user experience, business processes, security, development effort, and maintainability.

Discussion:
When should developers choose a Canvas App over a Model-Driven App? Can organizations combine both approaches to deliver a complete enterprise solution?

The decision between Canvas Apps and Model-Driven Apps should be based on business requirements rather than simply choosing the technology that looks easier to build. Canvas Apps provide significant control over the user interface and are particularly useful for task-focused applications, mobile scenarios, custom user experiences, and applications that need to connect to multiple data sources. Model-Driven Apps are more appropriate for data-centric enterprise applications built around Dataverse. They provide capabilities such as forms, views, dashboards, role-based security, business process flows, auditing, and standardized navigation with considerably less custom UI development. From an enterprise architecture perspective, the important question is not “Which one is better?” but “Which application architecture best fits the business process?” In some solutions, organizations may even use both approaches—for example, a Model-Driven App for core business operations and a Canvas App for specialized field or mobile scenarios.
