JavaScript is useful for extending the client-side behaviour of Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement model-driven apps.
Beginners should focus on variables, functions, objects, arrays, events, asynchronous programming and basic APIs.
Understanding form events such as OnLoad, OnSave and OnChange is particularly valuable for CE development.
The discussion can also explore when JavaScript should be used and when server-side logic or Power Automate is more appropriate.
Discussion: Which JavaScript concepts should a beginner learn first for real Dynamics 365 CE projects?

A beginner working with Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement should learn JavaScript primarily for client-side customisation and user experience, rather than treating it as a replacement for server-side development. The fundamentals should include variables, functions, objects, arrays, conditions, loops, modules, promises and modern JavaScript syntax such as let, const, arrow functions and template literals. For Dynamics 365 CE, the next step is understanding the form scripting model. Developers should know how to register JavaScript functions for form events such as OnLoad and OnChange, work with the form context, retrieve field values, set values and control field visibility or requirement levels. A particularly important skill is understanding asynchronous programming. Modern integrations often involve Web API calls, so developers should be comfortable with async/await, promises and error handling. Developers should also understand the Dataverse Web API and OData concepts because JavaScript can interact with Dataverse data through supported APIs. Avoid learning Dynamics development through unsupported DOM manipulation or directly targeting internal UI elements. Such approaches can break after platform updates. A strong learning path is: JavaScript fundamentals → Dynamics form scripting → Client API → Dataverse Web API → security and performance → solution/ALM practices. This combination gives beginners a foundation that is useful for real CE projects rather than only simple form customisations.
